Flashpoint at Black Hat USA 2018
As someone who has been attending Black Hat USA for more than 15 years, I can attest to the tremendously valuable experience the conference provides for security vendors, decision-makers, and end-users alike. Here’s why I continue to attend:
The Collaborative Atmosphere
Black Hat is one of the largest and most popular security events in the world. By bringing together more than 17,000 experts in one location, the conference provides the unique opportunity to interact with some of the brightest minds in security. And while attendees represent countless backgrounds, organizations, and areas of security expertise, they share many of the same motivations for coming to Black Hat: collaborate with like-minded experts, solve tough problems, and advance the industry.
This collaborative atmosphere is enhanced by the fact that many of the conference’s events and speaker presentations have an operational focus. Not only does this theme facilitate great conversations about the latest news and noteworthy developments in security, it makes it nearly impossible not to learn something.
Also, I would be remiss in highlighting events without mentioning the parties. Conference days can be busy and tiring, but with so many great parties, there is ample opportunity to kick back, grab a drink, and meet with old and new friends. Black Hat is in Las Vegas, after all, and the energy of this location combined with the awesome vibe of the conference and its attendees make for a fun and eclectic party scene. But, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas—with the exception of the relationships built, conversations enjoyed, and insights gained, of course.
Black Hat attendees, as I mentioned, tend to be extremely interesting, diverse, and accomplished. In the 15 years I’ve been attending, many of these people have become some of my closest friends, most trusted peers, and most valuable vendors. While I’m lucky to be able to see some of these people regularly, there are many others—especially those from other countries and continents—for whom Black Hat has become a much-anticipated annual reunion. This is why I always offer the following advice to conference newcomers: don’t be afraid to get out there and meet people!
