On January 26, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen’s Office of Supervision of the Foreign Agencies’ Affairs (OSAFA) issued a blistering statement against the recent establishment of a United Nations political office in Mogadishu. OSAFA asserted that the UN’s move “signals a new Western attempt to increase the instability of the Somali nation.” The statement warned “the Somali people to not be tricked by the [UN’s] vague terms and secretive initiatives,” which seek to “ignite conflicts and grudges amongst the local tribes.” OSAFA claimed that the UN’s efforts are “destructive to the sovereignty of the Somali nation [and]…belittles the dignity and existence of all the Somali people.”
