On January 24, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen issued a statement that detailed its successful attack on an Ethiopian army compound in Baladweyne, Somalia. The statement claimed Shabaab killed thirty-three Ethiopian soldiers and wounded dozens more. According to the communication, the attack demonstrated that Shabaab remains capable of “coordinating and carrying out major operations”, despite being ejected from the city by “Crusader” forces in early January 2012.
