On January 12, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen claimed to have captured several Kenyan government officials following a raid on a police center in Gerille. Shabaab reported that "7 Kenyan administration police and government” had died in the attack and that the group "will publish the identities of the prisoners soon.”
