Shabaab al-Mujahideen Does Not Recognize the UN as a Legitimate Authority

On December 9, 2011, Shabaab al-Mujahideen issued a communique stating that “we do not recognize the United Nations, or any of its institutions and affiliates, as legitimate authorities to regulate or govern the affairs of our nation and we will not accept any compromise when it comes to our religion.” Shabaab noted that it pledged “to multiply its effort in order to counter the UN-sponsored terrorism that threatens the lives of millions of Somalis living in south and central Somalia and defend the sovereignty of our nation from the aggressive invasion of the allied foreign forces at all cost.”
