Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb Claims 2 Suicide Operations

On August 27, 2011, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) released a communiqué claiming responsibility for 2 suicide operations on Algeria's largest military barracks, Shershal Academy. According to the statement, "The target was chosen carefully: the officers' restaurant and club is usually filled with nearly 100 officers, including some generals and the Algerian Military Institution's leadership." The statement indicated that at least 36 officers were killed and 36 injured in the attacks.
