In a communiqué dated April 17, 2011, Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) media official  Salah Abu Muhammad rejected a purported interview with an AQIM official in Al-Hayat as a fraud. AQIM “accuse[d] the Algerian intelligence that cooperates with al-Gadhafi’s intelligence of standing behind the fabrications and the falsification of this interview, based on proof that we possess.” According to the statement, "Attempts to show that Al-Qaida is managing and leading the peaceful popular protests" are "completely wrong" and "absurd." And taking responsibility for the anti-Gahdafi revolution in Libya "is an honor that we can neither claim nor allege." Regarding the Libyan rebels, AQIM stated, “We don't claim to supervise them and we don't purport to be behind them... We just contribute as others do."
