On February 23, 2012, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban) released a statement condemning the “ruthless martyring of defenseless [Afghan] protestors by the American invaders and their despicable backers.” In retaliation for the Americans’ “continued barbaric acts” and “blasphemy,” the statement contained five points of “guidance” to the Afghan people, including the need to expand “mere protests and empty slogans” to targeting American soldiers (“Kill them, beat them, take the as prisoners, and teach them a lesson”). The statement also urged the broader Muslim community to “take a united stand” against the Americans and “back the legitimate struggle of the Muslim Afghans against them.”
