On July 22, 2010, Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released a statement claiming responsibility for the July 14th attacks on the intelligence and security service headquarters in Zinjibar, Yemen. The simultaneous raids, launched by nearly 20 operatives, killed 3 police officers and involved the use of mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. The communiqué also includes the names of high ranking Yemeni officials AQAP claims to have assassinated, including Colonel Salem Amsbah (“head of counterterrorism” in Abyan province) and Lieutenant Jalal Uthmani (“an instructor at the Institute of Counterterrorism in Aden”).
