Shabaab al-Mujahideen Terminates Contract with International Committee of the Red Cross in Somalia

On January 30, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen released a statement announcing its decision to “terminate the contract of The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)” in order to “protect the welfare of the entire Muslim population in Somalia.” The statement alleged that the ICRC regularly distributed large quantities of “expired food” that posed “a considerable health hazard” to the “vulnerable” Somali aid recipients. The statement claimed that “despite being offered unrivaled access to [Shabaab-controlled territories],” the ICRC “repeatedly betrayed the trusted” of the local populace and “falsely accused the Mujahideen of hindering food distribution.” The statement closed with a pledge to shut down any other relief operation that it considers “detrimental to the health of the local population.”

Message from Shabaab al-Mujahideen Suicide Bomber – Beledweyne Operation

On January 26, 2012, an audio message was released from Shabaab al-Mujahideen suicide bomber Muhammad Abdi Hasan, who carried out an attack targeting an Ethiopian army base in Beledweyne, allegedly killing 33 soldiers. In the Arabic-language message, Hasan stated his “desire to satisfy my Lord who created me.” Hasan warned “the infidels who dared to invade the countries of Islam [that they] will not succeed” and that Shabaab “will throw our revenge upon you when we reach your regions.” Hasan closed his message exhorting the “the Mujahideen…to be steadfast and hopeful…[and] Allah-willing you will be rewarded heaven.”

Shabaab al-Mujahideen: Statement on the Opening of the United Nations Political Office in Somalia

On January 26, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen’s Office of Supervision of the Foreign Agencies’ Affairs (OSAFA) issued a blistering statement against the recent establishment of a United Nations political office in Mogadishu. OSAFA asserted that the UN’s move “signals a new Western attempt to increase the instability of the Somali nation.” The statement warned “the Somali people to not be tricked by the [UN’s] vague terms and secretive initiatives,” which seek to “ignite conflicts and grudges amongst the local tribes.” OSAFA claimed that the UN’s efforts are “destructive to the sovereignty of the Somali nation [and]…belittles the dignity and existence of all the Somali people.”

Ansar al-Sharia: Statement Regarding the Withdrawal from Rada'a, Yemen

On January 25, 2012, Ansar al-Sharia issued a statement explaining the group’s rationale for withdrawing from the Yemeni city of Rada’a. According to the statement, the group “agreed to leave” Rada’a on the condition that city authorities establish a tribal committee to enforce Sharia law, permit Ansar al-Sharia to operate freely, and release more than a dozen prisoners from custody. The statement closed with a warning that if the demands were not met, Ansar al-Sharia “[reserved the] right to take the action” against the violators of the agreement.
